Moving a FinTech company to the Cloud Faster

November 1, 2018 // By Magenic

Helping a major FinTech organization leverage Pivotal Cloud Foundry to accelerate cloud modernization and generate more business value.

Challenge

A Fortune 500 financial services technology company was looking to make transformational changes to their business by modernizing their application portfolio in the cloud. They had a goal to improve their customer experience with higher availability and better resiliency, but wanted to reduce running costs and increase their speed to market at the same time. Given their relative inexperience around cloud technologies and Agile development, the client faced significant challenges, both from a technical and cultural standpoint.

Solution

Magenic worked with the client to assess their expansive application portfolio, determining which would be suitable for cloud modernization. With over 60% qualifying with a wide-ranging technology set, significant strategic planning was required to determine which applications needed replatforming and modernization versus which applications required some level of refactoring.

Leveraging Pivotal Cloud Foundry (PCF) as the platform, much of the hosting, deployment and scalability complexity is reduced. In addition, whereas prior to PCF new products could takes months to have hardware and software resources provisioned before they could be released, teams are now able to be provisioned within days (sometimes hours).

Results

With over 30 applications already in production utilizing PCF, the client has realized a substantial increase in product delivery velocity. This has given them the ability to start the feedback cycle sooner, allowing for improvements to future deployments.

The continued shift toward Agile and improved DevOps maturity represented a significant cultural transformation within the organization, embracing new technologies and methodologies in which they had little prior experience. This invaluable shift has allowed them to utilize developer teams more strategically, improve overall velocity, and generate the most business value from their resources.
